OUR HISTORY- Nuestra historia

"Rio Frio" ("Cold River") was the original name given to this house. This is especially interesting given the fact that this area is neither cold and we have no rivers nearby. God in His providence, however, knew that the name would one day be changed to "Rio Vida" which means "River of Life".

"Río Frío"era el nombre original de esta casa, lo cual es bastante interesante dado que en esta zona no tenemos río y no es, ni mucho menos, frío. Sin embargo, Dios en su providencia sabía que ese nombre un día se transformaría en "Río Vida".

BEGINNINGS - LOS COMIENZOS

As a young man, Francisco (Paco) Platillero was on his way to begin studying to be a priest, yet while running errands one day in 1948, Paco met a leader of a local evangelical church at his uncle´s textile shop in Alicante. The man shared with him about the Lord Jesus and invited him to come visit his "underground" church. (The church was "underground" at this time due to the Franco´s Dictatorship). A few days later, while walking with a friend, he heard music coming from somewhere nearby and ran to investigate. It was the home-church. Paco entered the room and saw a sign with Jesus´ words: "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me." It was there that he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and decided to become a pastor.

Siendo un jovencito, Francisco (Paco) Platillero se iba a preparar para ser cura cuando, un día del año 1948, haciendo unos recados, Paco conoció a uno de los líderes de la iglesia evangélica local en la tienda de su tío, en Alicante. El hombre le habló del Señor Jesús y le invitó a visitar su iglesia "subterránea". (La iglesia era "subterránea" porque eran tiempos de dictadura, con Franco). Unos dias más tarde, mientras paseaba con un amigo, escuchó música que venía de algún sitio cercano y corrió a investigar. Era una casa-iglesia. Paco entró en la habitación y vio un cartel con estas palabras de Jesús: " Yo soy el camino, y la verdad, y la vida. nadie viene al Padre si no es por mí". Fue entonces cuando aceptó al Señor Jesucristo como su Señor y Salvador y decidió hacerse pastor.

Four years later, Nona McClure, arrived in Spain as a single missionary and met Paco at a church in Barcelona where he was studying in a seminary. They were married in 1957. Paco pastored churches in the U.S.A. and served as the director of Latin American Missions for the Southern Baptist mission board in Miami, Florida before moving back to Spain.

Cuatro años después Nona McClure, llegó a España siendo una misionera soltera y conoció a Paco en una iglesia de Barcelona, ya que el seminario dónde él estudiaba estaba en esa ciudad. Se casaron en 1957. Paco pastoreó iglesias en Estados Unidos y también fue dirctor de Misiones Latino Americanas, en la Misión Bautista Sureña de Miami, antes de regresar a España.

MAR CRISTALINO

Meanwhile, unknown to them, but known to the Lord, Reimar and Ada Nägelen were sent out by Torchbearers Klostermühle Bible school in 1968 to begin a work in Spain which later became "Mar Cristalino". They served faithfully up the coast in Valencia for over 20 years conducting house parties, children´s Bible camps, holiday weeks and many other activities.

Mientras tanto, y sin ellos saberlo, pero en los planes del Señor, Reimar y Ada Nagelen fueron enviados por la Escuela Bíblica de Portadores de Antorcha en Alemania (Klostermühle) en 1968 para empezar la obra en España, lo que más tarde se convertiría en "Mar Cristalino" Ellos sirvieron fielmente al Señor en la costa valenciana más de 20 años con campamentos para niños, semanas de vacaiones y muchas otras actividades.

THE HOUSE - LA CASA

In 1974, Paco and Nona and their children (Anna, Mary, Ruth, John, Joe and Paul) moved back to Paco´s hometown, Alicante, to start a Spanish church. Paco found "Rio Frio" (a small country house built in the 1960´s) quite by "accident" and knew immediately that this was the house for them. He purchased it and soon thereafter began expanding the house to provide room for church services with a dream of one day having a Bible school. The room that is currently the conference hall used to be a garage and the chapel. In 1990 Paco and Nona retired from the ministry officially but unofficially continue to minister to Spanish speaking people. Paco had always enjoyed Major Ian Thomas´ preaching and the children grew up listening to his tapes for family devotions. After Paco retired, he and Nona began praying about the possibility of a Christian organization using the house. In 1992, Nona called Ravencrest in Estes Park, Colorado to ask if Torchbearers would be interested in using Rio Vida since "Mar Cristalino" was being closed due to a government land annex. Major Thomas was busy preaching around the world (of course!) but was given the message when he returned and carried it around in his wallet for over a year. After sending various people to visit the house and report on the potential, he came himself in 1994 to see it. He was then able to foresee what Rio Vida could become!

En 1974, Paco, Nona y sus hijos (Ana, María, Ruth, Juan, José y Pablo) se mudaron a la ciudad natal de Paco, Alicante, para empezar una iglesia española. Paco encontró "Río Frío" (na pequeña casa de campo construida en 1960) por "accidente" e inmediatamente supo que esa casa era para ellos. La compró y poco después comenzó a expandir la casa para que hubiera sitio para tener reuniones y también con la idea de, un día, tener una Escuela Bíblica. La abitación que es ahora la Sala de Coferencias era entonces el garaje, que lo usaban como capilla. En 1990, Paco y Nona se jubilaron oficialmente del ministerio aunque continuaron ministrando al pueblo español. Paco siempre disfrutó mucho de las predicaciones de Major Ian Thomas y sus hijos crecieron escuchando los cassetes en los devocionales familiares. Después de que Paco se jubilara, él y Nona empezaron a orar por la posibilidad de que una organización cristiana usara la casa. En 1992, Nona llamó a Ravencrest en Estes park, Colorado, para preguntar si Portadores de Antorcha estría interesado en usar Río Vida, ya que Mar Cristalino había sido cerrado por la expropiación del terreno, por parte del gobierno valenciano. Major Thomas estaba ocupado en esos momentos, predicando la palabra alrededor del mundo, así que le dieron el mensaje en un papel que guardó en su cartera durante un año. Después de enviar a varias personas para ver la casa e informarle del potencial, vino en persona en el año 1994 para verla. Fue entonces cuando vio en lo que se podía convertir.

A NEW BEGINNING - UN NUEVO COMIENZO 

After extensive renovation work and thanks to the help of over 50 volunteers, Rio Vida opened its doors in the spring of 1998 to welcome our first official conference: a reunion of past Capernwray students, led by Sue Gilmore from Capernwray Hall.

Después de un extenso trabajo en la renovación y ampliación de la casa y gracias a la ayuda de más de 50 voluntarios, Río Vida abrió sus puertas en la primavera de 1998 para dar la bienvenida a nuestra primera conferencia  oficial: una reunión de antiguos alumnos de Capernwray, dirigida por Sue Gilmore de Capernwray Hall. 

Beds, furniture, cooking equipment and other materials from Mar Cristalino was brought and used at Rio Vida to be operational. None of us could ever have imagined how God would bring all of this about!

Se trajo material de Mar Cristalino, como camas, muebles, equipo de cocina y muchas cosas más para ser usadas aquí. Ninguno de nosotros hubiera nunca imaginado que todo esto puediera ser posible. 

Our prayer is that in all that we do here at Rio Vida, God would be glorified and that everyone who comes will leave having drunk from the only water which brings eternal life- our Lord Jesus Christ and be refreshed and renewed ready to be used of God to reach a desperately "thirsty" world.

Nuestra oración es que todo lo que hagamos aquí en Río Vida glorifique a Dios y que todo el que venga a este lugar no se vaya sin haber bebido del único agua que da vida eterna, la de nuestro Señor Jesús, y que salgan refrescados y renovados para ser usados por Dios en la meta de alcanzar a este mundo "sediento".
